synching data between Outllook and PDA with PalmOS

David Cook

I've got a Palm-OS based PDA (a Handspring Visor,
running Palm OS version = 3.5.2H1.5 to be exact).

I've been synching my Outlook data between my
Windows-PC and the PDA for a few years and
it has worked well. (Outlook is full Outlook from Office 2000)

Now I'm exploring an issue relating to just HOW MUCH
of each type of Outlook data gets moved to the PDA.
There seem to be builtin LIMITS on how much data goes from
the PC into the PDA, which makes perfect sense, as the Palm-OS
relatively has LIMITED amount of data-storage.

I notice specifically that for each NOTE in
Outlook, when I look at the data over in the PDA, only the first
PART of each 'NOTE' gets moved over there. (So, I conclude
that there must be a builtin rule saying something like 'move some
many bytes' of each Note over to the PDA. This also seems to
be try for each mail-msg, etc, etc.)

But, I can NOT find any way to adjust the quantity. (I've looked
both under these 'Chapura' settings and the settings in the Palm
Desktop application itself.)

Has anyone found any way to control the AMOUNT of data within
the various categories that gets copied across? (Right now, the
amount of each NOTE is what I'm focusing on. But maybe I
could use some OTHER 'document' than an Outlook 'NOTE'
to work around this data-size restriction? For example, are there
ways to synch certain kinds of TEXT files across that do NOT
have these same data-size restrictions!? Hmmm...maybe I
just need to "think outside the [Outlook] box"? Can an 'MS-Word'
document be synched between a PC and PDA?)

TIA...

This is a Chapura or Palm issue - not an Outlook one. If you can't find the
filtering settings in hotsync, check out the Palm and Chapura websites for
help. Are you using the latest version of PocketMirror? I believe you can
upgrade for free.

Not without some Palm add-in to handle it.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I do have the NEWEST 'PocketMirror' stuff.

Yes, it makes sense that synching an MS-Word doc or whatever
would probably require an agent (i.e. additional software) on the
PDA-side to make that work.

And, yes, I do understand that my question/issue (of data-size-transferred)
is not per-se an Outlook issue. (But, I figured that
'Outlook-knowledgeable'
people might know whether there might be a 'settings' knob somewhere to
tweak, no matter exactly WHERE that knob might be located. My GUESS
would be it's just a simple implementation-detail on the PDA-side that is
DISCARDING what it considers 'extra/unwanted' data during the synch, but
of course, I could be wrong.)

Again, thanks for the info that you did provide.

You're welcome - I don't have PocketMirror here (I use Intellisync) so I'm
afraid I can't be of much further help. I'd check with Chapura or Palm
support. Good luck!
