Sync Problems with Outlook 2003, cannot recieve emails

I'm getting this error for a user when they recieve certain virus as
attachments in Outlook 2003. Whenever they get that email, Outlook
2003 doesn't let them recieve that email or any others that come
after. The user has to go to a different workstation that has Outlook
2000 or use Web Outlook to delete the problem email(s) and then they
can recieve their emails. The user is having to do this 2-3 times a
day which could be lived with but is quite wasteful and annoying. We
are running an Exchange Server 2000 with Symantec 9 and Mail Security
4.5. The user's workstation is running Windows 2000 along with Office
2003.

I am wondering if there is a fix, or a patch or something that can be
done to stop this from happening. Also, the link that is listed in
the sync error message mentions nothing that is about or could deal
with this problem that I can see. I am the network administrator.

GEt a better AV Solution that cleans messages at your gateway and does not
allow the mail to download.

Thanks, I was hoping not to have to do that but it sounds like there
is probably not another option at this time. Any suggestions for a
different AV? I've heard some good things about Postini.

What antivirus are you using?

We're using Symantec and are having this exact problem.

Maybe someone could suggest how I could fix this problem? Deleting the
offending email doesn't seem to be an option.

What happened was Symantec antivirus for Exchange spotted an email with an
infection. It couldn't scan the attachment and quarantined the file.
Unfortunately, there was apparently some sort of corruption to her mailbox.
The user has Outlook 2000 and when it tries to synchronize with the Exchange
server, there's a synchronization error:

Error synchronizing folder
[80040119-544-50B-560]
The item was found to contain a virus that could not be cleaned. For
more information, contact your Exchange server administrator.

While she can't use Outlook to access Exchange, she *can* use the web
interface. All of her email shows up there, including the infected message.
But, I can't open or delete the message from there, it just shows up in the
message list. When I try to access it I get a 404 error (file not found).

I thought that maybe the problem was caused by a problem in the MTA data
files. I followed the procedures in KBA-175495 and KBA-164506 but apparently
there is no MTA corruption. Anyway, the procedure in the KB article 164506
didn't yield a valid queue ID, so it wouldn't have been much use.

I found KBA-842284 and tried having the offline folder .ost file
regenerated. That didn't do any good. Synchronization died at the same
place... that darn email.

If anyone knows how to track down and fix this Exchange corruption, I'd love
to know.

Thanks,

If it needs to be deleted at the gateway level, why not enable smtp virus
scanning and set the default action to delete entire message?
