synaptics touchpad wont work after xp pro upgrade from 98 SE

i upgraded my dell inspiron 7000 from 98 SE to XP Pro and
now i cannot use my touchpad (its an internal touchpad
which worked perfectly with 98 SE)

I have tried installing the latest XP drivers from
synaptics but that didnt help. XP wont even recognize that
there is a touchpad mouse attached. I tried changing the
bios setting to always enable the touchpad and still no
luck. Please post or email me with help. Thanks.

i tried that. dell does not support it for xp, only 98.
As a result i went looking around synaptics website and
was able to find touchpad drivers for xp but they did me
no good since xp wont even recognize the fact that there
is a touchpad present to install drivers for

One of the problems with some upgrades. Not all the old files may be
eliminated, causing confusion and consternation within the operating system!

Myself! I will never do anything but a clean install. It's always better to
start with a clean system and then add what's necessary.
