Symantec Update - Not good

I just ran Live Update & it installed a WMI component for Norton
Internet Security. As advertised, it posted a message that Live Upd
needed running again. I repeated it, until the message that all updates
are installed.
Security Center reporting for Nav/Nis wasn't changed from the
detected, but status unknown. So I rebooted. Whatever was changed
removed my Plextor PX-708A from the boot sequence in BIOS.
When I got back into XP, sure enough the DVD recorder wasn't in
my Device enumeration. I Uninstalled the "Phantom" and redetected.
Security Center saw the Norton Firewall for about 2 minutes before
it went back to "Unknown".
I haven't fully checked all this out, but this update from Symantec isn't
going to make people happy. My Advice to everyone with Nis/Nav
is "Do NOT run Live Update. This WMI Patch is not effective.

You're barking up the wrong tree.

There is nothing in Norton AntiVirus (which runs only in Windows) that will
prevent your hardware, any hardware, from being detected by the bios. These
detections are performed WELL before the operating system begins to even
think about loading!

My Plextor DVD-R was in the device configuration before Live Update
ran it's WMI patch. When I rebooted the DVD wasn't detected by BIOS
so the Intel 865 MB didn't have it in the ATAPI boot sequence. When I
got back into XP, the Device was phantomed, Seen but not connected.
I removed the Phantom, Rescanned and it was back. Then I rebooted &
the ATAPI category was repopulated with the Plextor. Nothing else was
done - so the Patch had to be the root cause. Just now I went to Symantec
and tried to run the "Automated Assistant" which caused a fault. The PC
was fine last night - it's only after this WMI update that things are going
wrong.

Again, Windows problems, whatever they may be, will NOT cause a hardware
device to be NOT detected by the bios.

You have hardware problems - plain and simple.

For me I would not trust Symantec products not to put feelers in below
the level at which detection happens. I would agree that there is
*probably* something else around in this case. but I do not trust Norton
one inch. And of course when the do put in an unofficial tentacle that
causes trouble when the system is upgraded they never accept
responsibility.
