I bought a notebook yesterday and now I want to transfer my programs and
files to the notebook from my PC. Where do I begin? Do I reload programs and
copy files to discs and they onto the laptop. Would really appreciate it if
someone could just do a list like 1,2,3,

You cannot transfer programs from one machine to another by copying - you
need to install them on the new machine from the original installation
disks. However, if these programs all came pre-installed on the PC, then
they are more than likely OEM versions, and as such are not transferable
anyway.

You can't copy Programs, you can copy Data from Programs and Install these
programs from their CD Software or Installation packages on the new Laptop.
Save the Files on a Removable Storage and if you have some or all of these
programs Installation Package on the Old PC you can Copy it and run it from
the CD you don't need to copy to the Laptop just run it from the CD to
install the program.
HTH.

Your 'programs' (applications) cannot simply be transferred (even if they
can - it's not worth the trouble and grief 95% of them will give you.)

You use the installation media for each application and install it on your
laptop - and that is only legitimate if the version of said application is
not an OEM and 'tied' to the first system it was installed on (your PC..)

Just a clarification on the terminology: they are both "PCs" (personal
computers). The older one is a desktop PC, the new one is a laptop PC (also
called notebook PC).

Where do I begin? Do I reload
programs

Yes. You have to reload (reinstall) the programs from their original media.
You can not simply transfer them.

Also note that, assuming you want to keep both computers, for most of those
programs you probably have a license to use them on a single computer, not
two.

and copy files to discs and they onto the laptop.

You can transfer data files in several ways. Here are a few:

1. E-mail the data from the old machine and read it on the new one.

2. Network the two machines and transfer the data over the network.

3. Use floppies and span the larger files over several diskettes using a
file splitting program (or any standard zip utility, which can also do
this).

4. Copy the files to CDs

5. Copy the files to a USB thumb drive.

Which of these is best for you depends on several things: how much data you
have to transfer, whether you plan to keep the old computer, whether you are
willing to spend a few dollars for a thumb drive if you don't have one, etc.
