switching between two network settings

A.M

Hi,

I need to switch between two network settings twice a day.

I use my laptop at both home and work. Eevery night and morning I have to
change my network setting from static IP to DHCP and vice versa.

Is there any better way for doing that?

Thank you,
Alan

Hi, Alan -

There sure is ;-)

If you look in the TCP-IP properties of the network connection you'll
see a tab marked "Alternate Configuration". Put your static IP
settings in there and the machine will fall back to them if it doesn't
find a DHCP server.

Hope this helps -

Thank you for your reply. The problem is at work we have a DHCP server, but
I must work with a static IP address. So I can not leave the main TCPIP
setting to "Obtain IP auto...". I have to enter the static IP address. The
alternate configuration TAB is only available when you choose "Obtain IP
automatically". Any solution ?

Sure - but you'll have to get the network guys at the office involved
;-)

It is possible to configure a DHCP server to give you the same IP
address every time - and on my network that's the way we configure them
if the user requires a static IP. Rather than have a buncha machines
floating around with hardcoded IP addresses, if a user requires a
static IP we configure the DHCP server to give it to them. The more
machines you have that are configured the same the lower your IT
support costs will be ;-)

If the DHCP server is configured to reserve you an IP address based on
the MAC address of your network card then you can set the machine up to
obtain an IP address automatically and it'll still get the same IP
every time.

If you just show this post to the network guys they should know exactly
what needs to be done.

Hope this helps -

These programs let you store multiple network configurations and
switch between them easily:
