Swapping XP Professional / XP Home

Guest

I've got a home laptop with XP Professional Edition, and a desktop with XP
Home Edition, and I'd like to swap them. That is, I'd like to install XP
Professional on the desktop, and install XP Home on the laptop. Before doing
so, however, I wanted to find out if there are any issues with activation of
the OS that I may need to resolve.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hello,
If you have a retail copy of both operating systems, then should be no
problems. But, if you bought OEM versions (probably the laptop came with a
preinstalled OS), then you cannot swap without breaking the EULA.

Thanks Marian. They're actually both OEM versions, so I guess that takes
care of it.

If both were pre-installed by the computer manufacturer, it wouldn't
work anyway, the EULA notwithstanding.

Pretty surely true. OEM systems are commonly customized with drivers
for the hardware they're intended for, etc. This is especially
important for laptops, which can have lots of proprietary gear. Your
laptop would probably not work right if you installed the OEM system
that came with your desktop. And both OSs are likely locked to the
BIOS of the machine they came with.
