Swapping or adding hard drive from one XP PC to another-possible?

Greetings-

I have two eMachines computers both running XP, first machine from
2002 & the second from 2004. The newer machine shut down after being
in use less than an hour, & went totally dead. Doing a bit of research
led me to replacing the original 250w power supply with a new Antec
500w, but the unit remains dead. No power up, nothing. My surmise is
that there was a 50/50 chance that when the power supply quit it may
have taken out the motherboard & processor as well.

That being the case, can I remove the hard drive from the stricken PC
& swap it into the older functioning PC in order to retrieve the
files on it-OR-can I add the hard drive to the older PC as a secondary
drive or slave & then get the files? The first eMachines has a 40GB
hard drive & the stricken one has a 60GB hard drive(not filled). I
have a Maxtor One Touch external drive also, & was thinking that if
the files could be saved from the dead PC I could add them to the
first, working PC & then copy them also to the external drive for back-
up(yeah, I know- I should've done that before!). I have the restore
discs for both eMachines PCs.

The stricken computer was used for scanning of family negatives,
slides, photos, record album covers, digital picture folders. I of
course still have all those negatives, etc., but there have been many,
MANY hours spent in the scanning & capturing process-hours I should
not like to repeat. In point of fact, I DID save many of these scans &
digital pic files to CD-Rs, but not ALL of them. And so if there was a
practical way to salvage the files off the hard drive it would save a
great deal of time, not having to laboriously engage in this work all
over again. Any tips & advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Move the 60GB hard drive to the older but working PC,
Make certain the 60GB drive has the "Jumper"
changed "Master" to "Slave" before you connect it.

Note: If the drive are from different manufactures you
may need to try several Jumper combinations including
"Cable Select" in order for the PC to see both drives.

You may what to consider copying your photo files directly to
the external drive first. Then reformat the drive you removed
from the dead PC to get rid of the Windows OS which you
can not longer use.

If your 60GB drive is formatted as NTFS and you get a
"Access Denied" on any of the files you are trying to copy
then see the information below:

I have not used it but it has been mentioned a number of times.

Thank you for this. I appreciate the response, & it seems that perhaps
I'll get through what I thought could've been a catastrophic loss
situation.

Hi Guys,

I have a customer who unfortunately has webspace at Hotchilli.com

I have the details to connect to the ftp and have done so successfully
and I have uploaded a test index.html / css style sheet.

But when you browse the domain it just sits there blank in a continuo
loop!?

I noticed their servers were down last friday night and even thei
website was down just for that one night.

I have tried emailing their supportline for account issues: no reply.

I have tried ringing their supportline for webhosting issues: n
reply.
I have tried ringing their supportline for account issues: no reply.

I have requested a callback from their website: no reply.

Apparently they have upgraded their servers earlier on this year, but
am getting nowhere fast with this company!

Does anyone out there have an account with these people
