Swapping Domains

We have a Win2000 Server running with approx. 40 users. Now we are going to
install a new server with win2003 server.
Now we want to convert/transfer these users from our win2000 domain to our
new win2003 domain.

How can this be done, without creating all new users, but at least preserve
the users personal settings.

Thanks in advance

Add the Win 2l3 server to the Win 2k domain as a member server, run dcpromo
to make it a DC and that information will replicate to the new server.

Of course you have to prepare the Win 2k domain for Win 2k3 by running
adprep on the schema master for your Win 2k domain first.

Thanks Danny, will try that.

One other question. After this, can we shut down the W2K Domain/Server,
cause we want to renew this server (new disks, raid controller, etc. and
also install Win2003 server)?

thx

The process is basically:

1) add the new server as member server
2) prepare the Domain for 2003
3) dcpromo the 2003 member server
4) transfer anything to the new server (eg files that may be stored on
the old one, services eg DNS and FSMO roles )
5) dcpromo down the 2000 server to a member
6) remove.

Just trying to add to the useful stuff that Danny has given you.

Cheers,

Cliff
