Svchost.exe

Hi,

I am running Windows XP, Version 2002 SP2 on a Compaq nc6220 with 2GB of
RAM. I frequently encounter situations whereby the laptop 'freezes', apps do
not respond, internal fan appears (certainly sounds as if its) 'maxed-out'.
At this point if I go the Task Mgr, I discover a process called Svchost.exe
is consuming > 90% of CPU resources?? What is this process? What does it do?
And is this normal? It cetainly does not appear normal and is incredibly
frustrating ....
This 'state' can continue for anything up to 3 - 4 mins when it starts
(which feels like an eternity when you are waiting for it to stop).

Advice greatly appreciated,

Don-

Svchost.exe is responsible for running a great many things. Use Process
Explorer (procexp.exe) from www.sysinternals.com to see which process
within svchost is eating up your CPU time.

From Ramesh's web site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm
Also: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide some of the detailed info you may need)
Expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded.
Next move the mouse cursor over the Svchost.exe process that you are
interested in.
Or expand the Svchost entry if you see a + sign to the left of Svchost
entry.
(You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the
Svchost.exe you chose)
Next double click on the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in.
The 'Properties' Window should now be displayed with numerous tabs
available.
(Two important tabs to look at are: Services and Environment)
