svchost.exe hogging my CPU

| Rather than piss around with trying to figure out why you're having the
| problems you are, you may wish to consider backing up your data and
| flatten and rebuild your system.

It may be prudent at this time !

Not an option (yet). I have over 150 apps on my PC and it would take months
to get it back to where it is now (without the 'problem'). And, who knows:
without knowing what is causing the problem, I might just end up with it
again. Besides, I plan to get a custom built desktop next year after Vista
has been out for a while. My notebook is about four years old and I don't
want to spend that much time reformatting and rebuilding. My plan is to
keep it hobbling along until I get my new one completely up and running.
Hope it lasts one more year. The other thing is that I've been doing a lot
of research on this svchost issue and I've found that it has hit a lot of
other people and none of them have found any kind of malware on their
systems. Maybe someone soon will come up with a solution. Meanwhile, I'll
keep experimenting with the Services. Thanks to all of you for your help!!!
If any of you learn of a solution, please email me at rmo555 at cox dot net.

You reach a point where the possibility of success diminishes once you've
picked all the low hanging fruit.

Very true - but I won't give up until my PC is no longer (reasonably)
usable. Thanks for the help............
