SVCHOST.EXE consumes 100% of CPU in W2K Professional

So, I'm merrily working away on my Compaq Armada 7400, running Windows 2000 Professional, and everything slows to a crawl. Task Manager shows me that systems idle processes and SVCHOST.EXE are monopolizing 100% of the CPU. Typically, svchost was running 70+%, and "idle" the remaining 20+%.

Now, my laptop isn't "running", it's S-L-O-W-L-Y crawling. Microsoft's site suggests that I contact RSA Security Technical Support to report this. Well, I'm not happy about having this situation in the first place, and I'm looking for a solution that won't entail great delays and having to shell out some cash -- esentially I feel that the operating system's failed.

Anyone have any insight to a good resolution on this problem?

This sounds familiar. I suggest you go to a friend's machine that is
working properly. Go to the SERVICES page on the Control Panel and look at
which services are enabled and running. Make your machine match. IIRC I
had shot down the Messaging service and it caused the situation.

Are you sure it is svchost.exe and not scvhost.exe? If it
is scvhost.exe you have a virus.

There are several infectors that target that file.

Please go to McAfee and/or Trend and perform and online scan of your platform ASAP !

Greetings --

If Svchost.exe is using such a large portion of your CPU cycles,
it has most likely been "hijacked" by a worm or Trojan. Have you
tried using a decent antivirus application with the most
currently-available virus definition files? A strong candidate would
be W32.Welchia.Worm.

W32.Welchia.Worm a.k.a. W32/Nachi.Worm
