svchost.exe - Application Error

Since installing SP2 onto XP Pro, getting an occasional
message - 'svchost.exe - Application Error'. The
description is:

The instruction at "0x009a6f9a" referenced memory
at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "written".

Don't know whether or not the instruction address changes
each time the message appears, but it occurs at startup
and seems to be related to viewing pictures. My sound
also occasionally cuts out, until I hibernate/wake or
restart.

I also get a Data Execution Prevention error on startup
(see separate posting from SDS); don't know if these are
related. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You receive a "Data Execution Prevention" error message in Windows XP
Service Pack 2
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid= 875351

Other things to consider:

1.Was the computer 100% virus and spyware-free before you installed SP2?
2. Is this an OEM machine (Dell, HP, Sony, etc.)? If so, did you first
go to the OEM's website and see if there were patches that needed to be
installed prior to SP2?

Troubleshoot the Data Execution Prevention error first and see if that
fixes things.

I get this message trying to open any explorer windows, whether it be My
Computer or Control Panel. Cannot open anything. Nothing works. Had to run
appwiz.cpl from the run option on start menu to uninstall SP2, and pc works fine
again with SP1. Installing SP2 again, problem back. PC free of virus and spyware
according to AVG and Spybot S&D. I tried manual disabling DEP, and error goes
away, but problem remains...ie any explorer window crashes before it can load.

I'm getting a similar error but at memory location "0x009296bc" regarding
svchost.exe.

I have the latest critical XP udpates, Norton Antivirus updates as well as
the Spybot updates.

I've also checked the file cksum (MD5) to verify its legitimacy per
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm ...and it is legitimate.

I verified that there is not an entry (possible trojan) in the
msconfig/startup for svchost.exe per
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?filter=svchost

Still, I feel uneasy to have a Data Execution Prevention (DEP) exclusion for
svchost.exe. Any ideas?
