I've read through most of the fixes already posted, but I am not a techno-gek
and need step-by-steps.... The problem started today, after 2 problem-free
years, suddenly on of the svchost.exe applications is hogging 99% of my CPU
and it will not stop. If you can help me in plain english, I'd really,
really, appreciate it.

From Ramesh's web site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm
Also: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

To find out more about Svchost.exe entries try Process Explorer:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide some of the detailed info you may need)
Expand the Process tree until 'Services.exe' has been expanded.
Next move the mouse cursor over the Svchost.exe process that you are
interested in.
(The Svchost entry that's taking up all the CPU processing %)
Or expand the Svchost entry if you see a + sign to the left of Svchost
entry.
(You should now see a pop up with a list of services associated with the
Svchost.exe you chose)
Next double click on the Svchost.exe process that you are interested in.
The 'Properties' Window should now be displayed with numerous tabs
available.

Have you installed SP3 yet? It seems to have caused at least one problem
for some in this area.

Download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

Hope this helps.

Hi.
The problem is the svchost instance that deals with automatic updates.
I'm living with this problem on my PC for two years.

If you leave your PC alone working, you'll notice that it's not blocked.
svchost works, and it will take a long, long time to finish (15-20 minutes).

The unique workaround i've found is to put Process Explorer in the
startup folder, so i can set the svchost priority to idle.
This permits svchost to continue working, and the PC will respond to
your commands even if the CPU is 100% used by svchost.

HTH, bye!

You are making assumptions about the other person's problem without
having the evidence. There are many differing problems involving
svchost.exe. That involving Windows Update is just one.

Sorry.
Please forgive me, i've had that only problem with svchost, so
i thought there was only that!
Obviously i was wrong.

Anyway, i've just proposed a workaround, not a solution.

Thank you very much for this link.
I'll give a look as soon as i can, it could solve my problem,
too.

Thanx a lot, forgive me again!
Bye!

Ive got the same exact issue on 8 computers, across 6 different locations and
growing.

Following the instructions so far in this thread has NOT solved the problem.

I want to thank you all for your willingness to help, downloading process
explorer really helped. But if it hadn't, the workaround would've been fine
by me- anything to not have to wait ten minutes for a window to open. Thank
you all very, very much!

you know, after downloading the process explorer and finding the renegade
svchost, I hit debug. At first it was panic city because I got a little
pop-up that said something about a terminal error, and that my system was
shutting down. The computer rebooted, and the problem was gone, gone, gone.
I'm up, running, and faster than ever. I really hope that you find a
solution, but this one worked like a charm for me. Thanks again JS and Gerry
for suggesting it!
