i recovered from a bad shutdown and was able to get
windows up and running using chdsk except.. on startup i
get something like virtual memory is too low after i log
in as adminsitrators. I tried rebooting in safe mode and
raising it but it will not stay. i have 512 mb of ram and
it shows 256 mg for total paging file (753 recommended).
i can decrease it to 0 but not raise it higher.I have it
set to custom 100 min 1000 max. I have 19985mb space
available. I have one drive and it shows those settings
on the drive label. i have deleted the pagefile.sys in
regedit (memory management) and rebooted wth no change.
by the way i do have permission. i doubled checked and it
does show me having 512 meg of ram. letting windows
handle things does not work nor does any other settings.
also i get a windows files have changed but but does not
recognize my recovery disc (running xp sp1)

Is your computer 100% virus and spyware-free? A badly infested pc can
have the symptoms you describe. Here are general malware cleanup steps:

What does a scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a version not
earlier than 2003 using updated virus definitions) show? Also, remove
spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. These programs are free, so run them both since
they complement each other. It is best to run antivirus and spyware
removal tools in Safe Mode. You may also want to run CWShredder and
HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm. Although CWShredder is
no longer being updated, it will still clean older variants of the
CoolWebSearch malware. A combination of HijackThis and About:Buster
(http://www.majorgeeks.com) works well in removing homepage hijackers.
Please read the instructions carefully. Make sure you are able to see
all hidden files and extensions (View tab in Folder Options). Also,
make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security
patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update. Make sure
you are running a firewall.
