There are 4 computers at work and one of them, while being able to
access the other computers, cannot be accessed by them.
I have read similar situations posted here but nothing is working.
Some people say that passwords need to be set in all the computers,
some say is not necessary...

help!

What kind of network do you have. Are the comps on a domain or joined
in a workgroup? If you are using simple file sharing on the machines,
the guest account must be activated. Then, delete passwords for guest
accounts on all PC's. That should get you access.

Dear Dirk,
We have a Linksys with a Lan IP Address.
The computers have at this point different OS. Mine has W2000, (the
one that is not accessible by the others), two others have W98 and a
new one has XP. So there menu items are different, with different
options at the Control Panel. Like identities, users, passwords.

I creater a new user profile at one of the W98 computer. I am unable
to see what users it already has and therefore, I don't know if the
Guest user is activated or not. After creating this Guest user with
leaving the password blank, I tried to connect to the computer that is
inaccessible. Now I get a new message: ""name of computer" is not
accessible. This user account has expired"

I don't think is a problem between 98 and 2000. The new computer with
XP is also unable to connect to the computer with 2000

By the way, what do you mean by "activate" the guest user?

Three different versions of Windows. Oh boy, each version handles
networking differently. Since I do not have access to W98 machines, I
can't advice on that. However, in my own searches on the net I did
fing quite some references to W98 network problems. I believe the
solution to that is setting up identical accounts (names+passwords) on
a mixed network. Simple file sharing will probably have to be turned
off. But since I have actually never done this, I suggest to simple do
a search on 'Windows 98 Xp network' or something along those lines.

Guest account: on 2000 and Xp open a DOS Box (Cmdline) and enter:

net user guest

This will give you the info on the guest account. It should be active.
