Superscripts in a cell

I have Office 2003/Excel 2003. I have had no success in putting a superscript
digit in a cell to reference a footnote. Is it possible? The superscript
takes until I tab to another cell, then it turns into a regular number.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Suppose you have TEST1 in a cell, and you want to superscript the 1.
Select the cell and in the Formula Bar position your cursor just
before the 1 and then with the mouse button down, just move the cursor
to the right so that the 1 is highlighted (and the rest of the bar).
Then click on Format | Cells and check Superscript, then OK. The 1
will now be superscripted.

Hope this helps.

I believe you can only do this if the cell is TEXT -- either contains a text
string (such as Sample1) or is formatted as text (if it only contains digits
and separators).

Thanks, Pete_UK. Your answer conforms implicitly with what Ron wrote, i.e.,
that the cell must be formatted as text.

The very best,

You're welcome, and thanks for feeding back. I naturally assumed you would
want some text followed by a super-scripted number in the same cell.

Thanks, Ron. Your answer explains why I could not do it.

Perhaps you can get the result you want using a different technique. e.g.
comments?

I should have expressed myself more clearly. Again, thanks for your help.
Three cheers for the UK!!
