SUN JAVA DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY - hangs, et cetera

My problem started when I bought a new computer. They both were the same
pentium 4 3.4 processors with 550 hyperthreading and WIN XP HOME ED SP2
installed.

BOTH GAVE ME JAVA PROBLEMS! and I can download till the cows come home SUN
JAVAs latest versions. IT STILL HANGS.. and it did it on both machines and I
am talking to tons of people with the same problem.

Any site that uses java will eventually hang for me. If not while loading (
you wait forever ), it will hang when you start another java run applet or
application from that same site OR even another java-run site.

I thought maybe it has something to do with the processor and specs of the
two systems ( by the way from different companies -- dell and gateway ), but
cannot verify that from anything I have researched.

BUT THE BOTTOMLINE IS ... if I can't get it resolved, I will either take
back the machine ( one has already gone back ), or somehow find the OLD
microsoft java, which I had no problem with on all these same sites, or I
will install WIN 98 - I program I had no problems with and was 10X's more
secure than WIN XP.. which also gave me immediate security problems until I
tightened the whole system so tight not even a locksmith could get into it.
: )

Sooooooo... my question! Does anyone know how to resolve my hanging and
locking issues ( and if you dont end this process it starts eating your mem
-- and the task mgr will not show that the problem exists - and when you end
the process it will take down everythign JAVA ( all sites ) and will then
give you a message that the problem was a "hanging application". DUH!

OR does anyone know where I can get the OLD java and how to reinstall it
onto this system??

I personally think SUN JAVA and MICROSOFT need to get their acts together
before some other browser, java, and operating system takes over the market.

Remember that Sun Java is not secure. I still use 3810 of Microsoft Java
Machine because of security issues in Sun's software.

Thank you all for the quick replies. I will try this tomorrow.

BUT -- the java.com site says my java is installed properly. And all the
options that are supposed to be checked, etc, in Explorer are also done.

Do you know that this will really fix it ?? OR why I would be having these
problems on all my machines? Someone mentioned an older version - could
this be the solution and where could I find it??

BUT I still would like to know where how I could grab the OLD java from my
OLD machine and install it here if "reinstalling" it for about the 3rd or 4th
time doesn't work!

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions - all of yoU! Much
appreciated!

Java site says my java is installed properly, but I am going to follow the
suggestions of everyone on here and try ONE MORE TIME! If that doesnt work
... and if I can find your version, I will try that too. BUT where could I
find this version? And any idea how to grab the old java from my old
machine and install it on my new machine? I haven't investigated if I can
find that answer myself yet, but if no one has a suggestion on doing this, I
will try to do it myself - as that is the only way I can see to end my
problems. Thank you again for your reply, as I appreciate it as all the
rest. Every little bit helps! : )
