SUGGESTION To Improve This Forum!

Guest

Thank you Microsoft for this Forum in which to ask the many questions we need answered

Thank you to all the great guys who take the time and trouble to answer! Jon, Chris, Steve etc. etc...

BUT! (theres always one right?) Like so many other Forums it would be really useful if this one kept current threads ON TOP! If a thread is being answered or even discussed it should be displayed by the "latest" time or date it was activated, in other words remain near the top of the page and current

The "old" MSNBC discussion boards were perfect in that regard (MS will know what I'm referring to). Microsoft develops the coding for so many web discussion sites this can't be a difficulty

Anyway, just a suggestion

Thanks again.

If you use Outlook Express, then you can sort the message by date, as well hi-light message they you
have posted, etc.

In OE go to Tools | Accounts | Add (or New) | News.
Set up an account for this news server:

msnews.microsoft.com

The server is free and does not require you to logon. This news server
carries over 2200 newsgroups related to Microsoft products and keeps
messages at least 30 days.

Please don't think I am critisizing this site, I think its a valuable resource, but like most people, I am, who stumble on, or are directed to this site by their browser

The browser image is slightly irritating when checking back for messages and having scroll through pages. The "search by author" rarely works properly. Not a biggie, it's just that I know MS makes some really nice, impressive even, Forum boards that are much more pleasing both to the eye and in use

Thanks

I always sort using "newest thread"..works for me..
however including the time as well as the date would be nice

I Don't use Outlook Express. Avoid it like the plague! :

I, and most businessmen I know in industry use Outlook, because we like being MS compatible and are used to it (pain though it is), or a few die hards who keep using Act. Basically we avoid OE and prefer our pim with all our email in a central local, organised..

Of course we use a browser for things like this and avoid newsgroups of all kinds also for many reasons I'm sure I don't have to explain..

Again, no great crit intended, just be nice to have a forum easier on the eye and to use

Thanks.

Did you know that Outlook Express is most likely installed on your machine
and that you can use both Outlook and Outlook Express.??
Did you also know that you can use Outlook Express in News Reader only mode,
and it will never open or query your mailboxes only the news groups.??

Outlook uses Outlook Express as the newsreader. You don't have to use OE for the mail. If you want to do what you want, do as has been suggested, or continue to feel your pain

I think Outlook uses Outlook Express for newsgroups, but in any case you can use OE just for
newsgroup and not for email, etc.

Outlook 98 and higher installs Outlook Express for newsgroup reading.

Yes Steve, I am well aware that OE is for all purposes, auto-loaded on my machine. Hard to avoid or even refuse. Even if you do, the very first IE upgrade re-installs it

However, you might disagree but I read a ton on technical data, mostly concerned with my business and wont load newsgroups. Also, sooner or later there is a conflict between Outlook and OE, as microsoft knows. Outlook is unstable enough without introducing "co" progs

NVM, I'll continue to research and use my browser and please ignore my "suggestion". People used to things in certain way resist change - as easily demonstrated here... :

If you don't like Outlook Express (I don't particularly like it either...infact all I use it for is the newsreader) use Mozilla.. it has a really nice newsreader built in.

Outlook uses OE as a newreader???

Didn't think Outlook had a newsreader, I know O2000 doesn't or if it does ... what the heck am I using OE only for NGS for?

It's not that anyone is ignoring your suggestion, it's just that it's much
harder to implement than you realize ( if even possible ) due to the nature
of the forum / news group and the problems with maintaining "thread"
integrity. Posts are simultaneously archived in the web servers, the nntp
servers, and several other subscribing web based forums and the Google
Groups.

I also read a ton of technical data.

But I really don't understand your aversion to subscribing to news groups.
They're some of the safest content on the Internet.

I'd use the forum more often, except I always forget where it is..and the ng is faster it think.

like you I don't like the web interface of this ng. the old one was worse.
I use outlook express strictly for this newsgroup. I run outlook 2002 for
real business and I've never had a problem with one because of the other.
Outlook Express is definitely the best way to use this ng.
