Suddenly unable to send or receive email in Outlook

email in outlook 2003 has been working well, but now will neither send nor
receive. I get the following error messages:

Task 'SSAWG - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC15) : 'Unable to connect to
the network. Check your network connection or modem.'

Task 'SSAWG - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210A) : 'The operation timed
out waiting for a response from the receiving (POP) server. If you continue
to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet
service provider (ISP).'

Internet browser access through the local network continues unimpeded as do
send/receive from separate email accounts accessed through Firefox from the
same computer.

I have changed no settings.

It may be coincidence, but this occured after installing an automatic
windows update.

Any help will be appreciated.

0x800CCC15 is a socket error: SOCKET_CONNECT_ERROR Unable to open
Windows Socket.

This behavior occurs when you connect to your Internet mail server using a
SOCKS proxy server, even though you can successfully connect to the Internet
using a SOCKS proxy server. Normally this is an error with OE and Sun Solaris
though.

The second error is a timeout error. It would seem that Outlook is not even
talking to your server. I would suggest shutting Outlook down and scanning
your PST for errors. You may have to run it repeatedly until it finds all
errors and repairs them. Once you've scanned it through and no errors are
found, open Outlook and try to send/receive again.

Thank you for your help. I am not technically savy enough to know about SOCKS
proxy servers. I did scan the PST file a number of times. The first time it
found a few errors, but no errors were found on subsequent runs. That did not
solve the problem.

I use a desktop computer most of the time, but when traveling I synch to a
laptop that I then carry. I use Briefcase, and include the .pst files in the
synch update. I have had no problem with that. Now only the desktop computer
gives me the send/receive problems. I am using the laptop to retrieve and
send email today while trying to figure out the problem on the laptop. I now
have both connected to the same LAN, and seeking the same servers SMTP and
POP servers.

I am having exactly the same problem. Two different PC's one running vista
one with XP SP3, outlook will no longer connect. It will connect if i
disable trend. It appears that the problem occurred after installing lasted
update on 18 July.

Have sent an email to trend support seeking advice.

I have checked with Trend and the issue does not appear to be the AV, as
outlook will not connect at all now, even with the AV and firewall switched
off. The issue appears to lay with outlook or recent updates to the OS.
