I have had a good read of the Microsoft information on the error, but none
of it appears to be applicable to me. I have always had a virus scanner
(AntiVir) and use Zone Alarm as my firewall. I have not knowing installed any
new software/hardware or drivers that are not XP compatable.

it is very frustrating and I really don't know where to begin fixing it! I
don't want to have to wipe my whole hardrive and start again as it was less
than 3 months agao that I did this. Any suggestions as to the meaning of the
error code (it is always the same one) and what to do about it?

Thanks,
Claire

Unfortunately the error code I have (1000007e) is not listed on this site.
Any other suggestions?

The firt link is one which I have already visted - I read the links on the
page to see if any of them applied to my problem but unfortunately none of
them matched the symptoms although the error codes did. I am wondering if it
might be a RAM problem - I have 256mb RAM with an Althon XP2400 processor. I
did a pc scan yesterday to assertain system performance and it suggested I
should have at least 512mb RAM...so i have ordered more. Even still, I am
concerned about the sudden shut down as it happened no less than 5 times
yesterday. Should I investigate the hotfix solution?
