Sudden and random C++ runtime errors

My XP Pro has suddenly been plagued by various programs terminating as they
are starting. I get one C++ runtime error pop up that says that the program
has requested to be terminated in an unusual way. Then when I click ok, I
get another that gives the name of the offending program and says that an
instruction at some memory location tried to read another memory location
and the location could not be read.

Adobe Acrobat is one offending program. MS Word is another when I try to
insert a picture from a file (jpg). Corel PaintShop ProPhoto XI is another.
The PC is an HP with a 3+GHz Pentium, 2 Gigs of RAM 600Gig of disc space
(300 available).

I have down loaded the C++ v6 redistributable but after I extract the
executable from the zip file and double click on it, nothing happens. I
have even tried to run the executable in Safe mode and nothing happens.

I would like to use the programs that will no longer run. Any suggestions?

help me? I'm having trouble with my laptop!

The reason you're having such problems is that you are using the web
interface to participate in this newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest,
most error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a
newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows. See
