Subject: DOS Program does not see SCSI devices.

Hey folks,

I have this ancient DOS program TPU.EXE by Novastor. It is a SCSI tape
utility that I use to read SCSI tapes. I have used it for years on
dos/win3.1/win95/win98, all with multiple adaptec scsi cards and 8mm, 4mm, 9
track... SCSI drives.

I now have a nice new DELL with XP sp2. TPU.EXE runs, but does not find any
SCSI devices. I also have the new Novastor program NovaExchange (newer, but
with less features and more difficult to use). I can find the tape drives
just fine with the XP version of NovaExchange, but it stinks.

Is there any way I can get the old Novastor program to recognize the tape
drives on XP?
I have tried updating the ASPI drivers to the latest 4.7.1 , but still get
the same result; the program runs but will not see the SCSI tapes.

Thanks in advance,

Vinny

It is likely your DOS-mode program requires direct access to the
hardware an no NT version of Windows will permit that. You need to use
the NT version of the program (or a 9x version that still functions by
NOT using a VXD driver so it will work under NT/2000/XP). You could
create a shortcut to the tpu.exe program and then right-click on the
shortcut to see if using one of the compatibility modes gets it to work,
but I doubt it. Otherwise, create a bootable MS-DOS floppy which loads
the DOS-mode drivers and use your TPU program from there.

Vinny L,
I've seen a similar problem with other older programs.
The fix was to use with an earlier version of the ASPI drivers, a version
recognized by your older program. The trade-off is the older ASPI drivers
might interfere with other SCSI devices/programs. Get copies of several
versions of the ASPI drivers and try. CAUTION - use of wrong mix of ASPI
drivers can cause BSODs, simply reboot and remove offending driver and try
the next.

Good Luck
Jeff
