You need a domain name, some registrars are under $10 a year domain names
are pretty reasonable.

Correct, but the name doesn't need to be in any "particular"
zone/domain -- it just needs to be publicly registered.

One obvious place is in the PARENT domain -- or in one of
those fixup type zones -- like dynamic DNS many of them will
give you this for free even.
