Subdocument default template

Scenario: In Word 2003, when I create a subdocument within a master, save the documents, then open the subdocument, the available formatting defaults to an abbreviated list of styles unrelated to the master document styles. When I re-open the subdocument within the master the styles/formatting assumes the master set, which is fine.
Problem: I would like to be able to open the subdocument with the same formatting styles as in the orginal master, without having to go through various work-arounds to get the same "look". Any suggestions? Thanks.

Use the Organizer to copy the styles from the Master to the subs. When you
do this, select all the styles to be copied and click on the copy button
three times. When asked if you want to overwrite, say Yes. However...

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and
those that will be corrupt soon. See <URL:

Master Document feature and workarounds. (This page also has a link to Steve
Hudson's chapter on how he gets Master Documents to work.) See <URL:

information on what goes wrong, and <URL:

how to salvage what you can.
