style displayed with the wrong font

I've created a custom style with Arial as font, and when I apply it, it turns
the text to Book Antiqua (or maybe Times New Roman, I'm not sure because even
the Styles task pane insists on telling me it's Arial, which it blatantly
isn't). I've Ctrl+Q it several times to remove any possible manual
formatting, but my custom style still applies that unwanted serif font while
saying it's Arial.
Any ideas why this may be happening?...

Ctrl+Q removes manual *paragraph* formatting. To remove direct *font*
formatting, select the text and press Ctrl+Spacebar.
