Stuck IE sessions

I am running IE 6.0. I have a problem where popup java screens are not working properly. The page trys to come up, and I get the border, then the page freezes. Pages will continue to pile up. I can not close the page by hitting the X in the upper right corner, and instead my right click the exporer page on the bottom bar, and close it that way

Any ideas? I am tempted to reload IE 6.0, though it appears that I am having problems with downloading from the windows update site too. Just sits and freezes...sounds too familiar
