Strange problem

Hi,

Need some second opinions on this. The problem is one program that keeps
locking up the computer forcing a reboot all the time. The program is
Eve-Online. I was having this problem on the computer when the OS was W2K,
but had a serious HDD crash and had to replace it. So I installed XP Pro
SP1, then updated to SP2. On both OS, I had all the latest driver updates
(Eve said to check all driver, which I did without their suggestions),
latest Direct X as well, but the problem persists on the fresh install. On
my notebook with XP Pro SP2, it works with no problem though. The system is
a P3 1 Ghz, 1.32 Gb RAM, ASUS GeForce 5700 256 Mb DDR, using a Logictech
cordless trackball, SB Live soundcard. I`m not sure, but on some of the
reboots, I loose my trackball (USB type) and have to replug the USB
trackball back in. I would try a PS2 mouse, but the PS2 mouse port is not
working. Since this problem occurs in two different OS on the same system,
I can rule out the OS (since it works on the laptop XP Pro SP2), as well as
the HDD. Keyboard is new too and the video card is barely a month old. The
problem only occurs with that one program though. Any suggestions on a
likely culprit? Do you think it could be a program conflict with one of the
drivers ( Trackball, video)? Some other peice of hardware starting to fail?
As for programs, the Notebook has the same programs installed and same
background programs running as well. All I can think of is driver conflict
or hardware. Sometimes the system locks up right away, sometimes it can go
for hours playing the game, then a lock up.

Hi Jim,

Its an online game. can check it out at www.eve-online.com They have
a troubleshooting page, but like most, its useless.

Jeff
Hi, Jeff. I can think of a few things to check out:

1. Do you play any other graphically intense games like Eve? If you do,
are they OK?

2. Eve might just be buggy.

3. Maybe some of your hardware is overheating. Open up the case and play
with it open where you can see it. Observe the fans, particularly the
one on the processor (if you can see it) and the video card. Don't
laugh (OK, you can laugh but techs use their noses when
troubleshooting, too) but when you get a crash, sniff around inside
your pc. Do you smell anything smokey or "wrong"?

4. You've got a good video card and plenty of RAM, but your processor is
a little on the elderly side. Does it meet Eve's system requirements?

5. Test your RAM. You can run Memtest86, but you might also want to
actually swap it out. Try different slots if your motherboard will let
you.

Hi Malke,

I play several other games that are graphically intense and have no problems
with them, especially with EverQuest. I know Eve is a little picky at
times, it didn`t like the one version of NVidia driver, so updated to the
latest one. Also updated to the latest DirectX.

The system doesn`t over heat, I regulary check all fans and heat sinks to
make sure they are clean, plus I have the side panel off of the computer to
improve air circulation (can`t wait to get one of the new cases with better
ventilation)

The system still fits within the game hardware specs, though one day I will
be able to upgrade the MoBo and CPU, hopefully soon. The current MoBo and
CPU I bought back in Dec of 99. I did swap out RAM with spares I have and
still same problem. It seems when I defrag both the C drive and D
drive(games) the game will run fine for at least 3 to 6 hours, then get the
system lock up.

I just wonder if its a driver issue (mouse, video) or maybe process`s from
the CPU is starting to go. The system has been on 24/7 since I built it
over 4 years ago. The video card was replaced a few months ago when my
other finally crapped out. Then just the past weekend I replaced the main
drive after serious errors (restorer 2000 was able to recover my data) and
powersupply when the last outage seem to have damage it (one of these days I
can afford a UPS, if my wife stops shopping).

Its just strange that it happened when it was on W2K OS and now happening on
XP Pro SP2. So its either driver or hardware. I sometimes suspect the USB
ports that my mouse is in, I have both onboard and PCI 4port USB on the
computer. Who knows.

Actually, your own troubleshooting indicates that the issue is with Eve
and not your system. If you play other graphically intense games that
don't exhibit the same symptoms, you know your hardware/drivers can
handle what you're doing. There's something in the Eve code that
doesn't work with your system.
