Strange problem with configuring TCP/IP

Hi all,

I'm trying to fix a networking problem for a friend's
laptop. I need to network it onto a small business
network (not wireless) which has it's own gateway, IP add
etc. I assume that it should detect automatically a lan
network. Somehow it doesn't work, at least not with the
right netmask and DNS etc. So I tried to configure the
components manually. The properties option for any of the
components (e.g. Internet TCP/IP) in the local lan
connection does not function at all. Even installing and
uninstalling the components are not possible. Since I've
managed to put the laptop onto my own wireless network so
I assume that all the components for networking work
properly. I was thinking of reinstallation the network
components, but problem is that my friend has lost his
installation CD. I'm not that familiar with Windows 2000
so it may be something very simple which I've completely
missed. Thanks a lot!

Are you logged on as administrator ?? Are there any group policies active
that disable a non-admin from changing the TCP/IP settings, installing
components etc ... ??

Vaya.
