strange new folders appear

Recently folders have been appearing in my D:. Looks like MS update related.
The folder names consist entirely of hex digits like a GUID but no hyphens
and too short.

The first to appear
2B6688B6E33193AE932D6760
The most recent
9A81D6281BCDC46F3D11AF

Afaik, I haven't changed any update settings. Why are these folders here and
should they stay?

TIA

Thanks Wes,
These folders couldn't have been created by SP2 or earlier.
This machine was a rebuild approx 14mths ago when HDD died.
I re-installed from a SP1 CD and straightway did SP2 etc

However, I am 95% convinced that patches are the culprit.
I have deleted them and I received zero "access denied messages"
Why then is XP suddenly unable to del them?

Why then is XP suddenly unable to del them?

Beats me, poor programming probably. MS hurries to get these hot fixes out.

Hope this helps. Let us know.
