Strange issue

My computer connects to the internet through a cable modem. I can surf web
pages just fine, but I cannot get Microsoft Antispyware to update, says it
cannot find the connection. Also, when I try to go to ameritrade's site, I
get page cannot be displayed once I click on the login link. I've reset the
TCP/IP stack using "netsh int ip reset restlog.txt" and also ran WinsockXPFix
and still the issue remains. Not having problems getting IP address or
getting to most sites.
Any ideas?

The "netsh ..." fix, and WinsockXPFix, are but 2 of the 5 fixes described in
this article:

But from the sounds of it, you have an MTU problem.

Chuck,
Thanks for the suggestions, but neither of them corrected the issue.
I've tried using Firefox to see if that helped, to no avail. Firefox tells me
the connection was refused by any webpage that I attempt to go to.

You need to consistently define your problem. First "I can surf web pages just
fine", now "the connection was refused by any webpage". Which is it? Pick
three web pages that you can NOT surf to, and ping them by name. List the
website name, and resolved ip address, for the 3, here.

Chuck,
Sorry about that, the problem changed after attempting the two suggested
fixes. The problem as it stands now is that IE or Firefox will not open any
webpages. However I can successfully ping yahoo.com & google.com. The other
domains, microsoft.com, digital-doctors.com, and ameritrade.com that I try to
ping give "request timed out" for all four packets. All other PC's on the
same Netgear router are working correctly on the internet.

To help clarify
Destination IP Add Ping Success?
yahoo.com 216.109.112.135 Yes
microsoft.com 207.46.19.60 No
google.com 216.239.57.99 Yes
digital-doctors.com 67.18.54.31 No
ameritrade.com 199.200.9.1 No

Hope this helps.

OK, I think we can clarify one thing anyway. Both Ameritrade and Microsoft have
large internal (private) networks, and their perimeter routers absorb or block
pings. I don't get responses back from them either. Dunno about
Digital-Doctors though. Google and Yahoo, OTOH, have large external networks,
which are open to the public.

Now that your browsers are consistent, and don't open any webpages:
1) Precisely what error do they display?
2) Do they not display Google or Yahoo?
3) Have you tried accessing webpages using the ip address?

Chuck,
The error displayed is "Page not found" (IE) and "The connection was
refused" (Firefox).
Niether will display google or yahoo.
Niether will access the webpage using its IP address.

OK, you can ping Google and Yahoo, so you have connectivity. You can ping by
name or by IP address, so name resolution is OK. You just can't load web pages,
by name or by IP address, getting "Page not found" (IE) and "The connection was
refused" (Firefox).

This almost has to be an MTU problem. It's not a DNS problem, or a name
resolution problem. And you have connectivity (ping anyway). The only thing
left is the MTU problem.
