Strange Field Code

I'm using Word 2003, SP 2 to write software manuals. I've noticed recently
this field code I don't remembe seeing before: {XE ""} or {XE " "}. It shows
up after the field codes for captions and indexing codes and then randomly
throughout the doc. Also, when I go to Tools>Options>view and click Hidden
Text, it shows up. However, when I ckoose Field Codes/Shading - Always, it
does not show as shaded as other field codes do.

Does anyone know what it is? I've been having problems with table and figure
captions recently, and wonder if this strange code is related to my
problems.

XE fields are index entry fields.

XE fields are inserted when you mark text for inclusion in an index.
They are formatted as hidden and, yes, they are invisible unless
hidden text is displayed, even if field codes are shown.
