Strange Event log errors

What do you make of these strange errors I'm seeing in my
Event Viewer?

Event ID 11

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0
\DR0.

Event ID 5

A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort0.

You are having a hardware error on your first hard drive. It is either the
IDE controller or the hard drive itself. You may also start getting event
15 and 50 and 51. You will probably have to replace the drive.

Leonard,
How could I test it to determine if it's an IDE controller
or the hardrive? Is there a diagnostic test for this? It's
a Western Digital. If it's a corrupted IDE controller,
then how would I replace it?

This computer has been experiencing another hardware bug
for as long as I've owned it. Every couple of startups,
the hardrive won't initialize, as if no power is getting
to it, so I'll have to recycle the power button.

I have been seeing these Event log errors for a long time.
This hardrive is a replacement for an earlier one that was
bad. I have one of those removable hardrive holders, and I
had one of those go bad too. That one had a bad IDE
connection.
Thanks,
Fred

There is really not a good way to test if it is the controller or the hard
drive other than replacing hardware. However given your boot problem where
the hard drive doesn't initialize every time I would suspect it is a drive
problem and not the controller. I have found hard drives less reliable the
last couple of years. I have had 3 fail in 3 different systems.
