strange doings on Dell laptop

my wife's laptop is displaying some odd and suspicious behaviors. I would
suspect malware of some sort but cannot track it down. from time to time her
email (she uses OE 6.0) slows to a crawl when sending/ receiving, and
eventually hangs altogether. when this happens the computer must be shut
down by holding down the power button. Zone Alarm also flags some outbound
outbound processes, which she blocks. they are always named "object
nnnnnnnn". there seems to be some connection between the email problems and
the blocking of these processes, but I haven't pinned it down yet.

Also when Norton Antivirus starts on bootup, she gets "Access denied" on the
boot drive.

Any insights?

been there. only tracking cookies, and something TrendMicro identifies as
TROJ_SE.85638, but which is not found by two other scanners. I'm lining up
#3 now....

tx for the suggestion.
