Strange behavior of a rule in Windows mail.

T

Tino Wintershoven

Hi,

In Windows mail i've made two accounts.
One of the accounts is an alias of the same emailbox.
They log in with the same accountname and password.

Recently i've made a rule in Windows mail so that all email from one of the
accounts is placed is its respective folder.

The rule works partially because now, all email from both accounts is moved
to the folder, while only one of the account is mentioned in the rule.

It looks like it has something to do with the fact that one of the accounts
is an alias. The use the same emailbox.

Can someone please tell me if this is the case.
Has someone have any experience with the problem mentioned above.

The OS is Vista.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Tino Wintershoven.

Write the rule like this:

Where the message is from the specified account.
Move it to the specified folder & Stop processing more rules.
Click on: Specified Account and enter the account name for the second
Inbox.
Click on: Specified Folder and select the folder you created.
Name the rule.

In general:

Have all rules that Delete it from server first.

Rules that divert mail to folders next.

All others last.

Make sure that every rule also has Stop processing more rules checked,
unless that option is grayed out.

How can you have two accounts with the same accountname and
password? There would be no way to control which account
downloaded which messages.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but by 'accountname' you mean the cosmetic
name of the account, which can be changed without affecting anything,
rather than the account username which is tied to a specific mailbox
on the server?

If you need more help, post the message rule you are using.

One account is with emailadres (e-mail address removed) and the other is (e-mail address removed)
Due to privacy reasons the names (xx - yy) are made up.
They both log in with the same name and the same password.

I understand your reaction and i don't get it as well, but you can actually
get all emails separatelly from both accounts.
I think that this is the problem.

Thanks for your reaction.

They use both the same loginname and password.

Not sure what you mean by "same name".
When you go to Tools, Accounts, select the account, Properties, Servers,
both accounts show the identical 'E-mail username' entry?
Shouldn't one use 'xx' or '(e-mail address removed)', and the other uses 'yy' or
'(e-mail address removed)' ?

Please post a copy of your message rule(s) that affect this.

In that case you can't control which account downloads which message.
In order to show you what is happening, you need to add the 'Account'
column to the message list pane. Right-click on any column header in
that pane, select 'Columns', then add the Account column. I think you
will be surprised at the result.

By name i mean username

Yes, both accounts have the same email username and password. How strange it
may sound.

I can't post a copy because the rule is on a laptop of an acquaintance.

All you did was make a mirror image of your current account. You need to
get a second e-mail address from your mail server and it /must/ have it's
own WinMail logon password. Then you can use a separate Inbox with a rule
to filter in messages.

Thanks Bruce,

I know now that two seperate accounts is the solution.
My acquaintance doesn't want that and said that he no longer uses the rule.

Fine by me.

Tino.
