Strange behavior in notification area

When I right-click a notification area icon to bring up a context
menu, many times when I'm finished a portion of the menu is left
behind until some other image or window overwrites the area in which
it previously appeared. What could be causing this?

Video card, probably? Has this just started happening? Or has it been
there right along? More details are really needed.
If it just started, what change happened just before it started?
Etc.?

We really need more information... Such as when did you notice it doing
this? Do you remember installing any new programs?

The first time I noticed it was after installing Apache HTTP Server
2.2.8 about three months ago. I also noticed that even though I have
the "Hide inactive icons" box checked, and all my icons are marked
"Hide when inactive" the little << arrow never shows up and inactive
icons are never hidden.

More information: I had the Apache Server icon marked as "Always
show". When I changed it to "Hide when inactive" the little < arrow
now works properly and inactive icons are hidden. But all the time the
Apache icon was marked "Always show", none of the other icons were
ever hidden and the arrow never appeared. I don't know if having the
Apache icon hidden when inactive will solve the problem, but it seems
to be working now OK.
