Strange audio problem

I have lost all sound in my machine. One year ago, I tried to us MS Movie
Maker. Since then, all of my control regarding audio in the control panel
are greyed out, and I'm informed that I have "drivers installed but not
started." Microsoft technical documents say nothing about this, and I've had
three Microsoft consultants fail to help me on line. We've uninstalled
sound cards, reinstalled them, uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, all to no
avail. Any suggestions?

Do you have an onboard sound port on the motherboard? Either way, have you
tried checking your CMOS setup to see if the settings were correct? Here is
a little sound troubleshooting guide I found online, althought you might
have tried them already.
