Hello all,
I have Windows XP and recently brought my laptop down to factory defaults
and i had to install everything and all windows updates. However, i now have
the welcome screen and have to log on but just my clicking on my name. The
last time I deleted the aspnet user account which solved the problem and I
could go straight to the desktop but I don't want to do that again (i thought
it was some kind of spyware until i found out what it really was!!) can
someone tell me please what is the easiest, safest and less complicated way
of doing this to go straight to desktop on turn on pc, no welcome screen, no
clicking user accounts, nothing...just straight to desktop?? Thank you any
help would be so appreciated, driving me crazy!
Thanks

instructions on your website but i'm afraid a little box still pops up but
this time i hit enter and it takes me to desktop. I would be very happy to
bypass all of this and straight to desktop. is there any other way??

Lets go for the easier root. Download the free application called TweakUI
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx (You
need to look on the right hand side of the web page and select TweakUI.exe
(not the titanium version)

Once you have downloaded it, install it and then run the application. In the
TweakUI main window click the + (plus) sign next to the Logon option and
then click 'Autologon' In the auto logon window put a tick in the box marked
'log on automatically at system startup' then click OK. Now restart your PC
and you should boot straight to the desktop.

You did this right??
How to Automatically Logon to Windows XP:

If you want XP to boot directly to the desktop, follow these steps:

1. Click Start/Run and type: control userpasswords2 and press OK.

2. Remove the check mark from from the "Users must enter a username and
password to use this computer check box. Click Apply.

3. Enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with,
and then click OK/OK.

Yes Paul he did it right, it is just that now he gets the 'classic' log on
screen more reminiscent of Windows 2000. I have tried the instructions
myself and get exactly the same result. The easiest way around the problem
is to use TweakUI as I have recommended in my last post to husky. That one
'does' work.

I left out step 4.

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK.
3. Clear the "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" check box, and then click Apply.
4. In the Automatically Log On window, type the password in the Password
box, and then retype the password in the Confirm Password box.
5. Click OK to close the Automatically Log On window, and then click OK to
close the User Accounts window.

Start/Control Panel/User Accounts/Change the way users log on and
off/make sure both Use the Welcome Screen and Use Fast User Switching
are ticked/Apply Options. Reboot.

Husky, I have used TweakUI on my copy of XP and it has worked and XP boots
straight to the desktop. A simply registry tweak solves the problem, but
rather than outline what registry keys you should change it was easier to
let TweakUI do it for you.

I have added the TweakUI option to the instructions on my website.

Hi John, that's great! Your solution worked for me and it's lovely to go
straight to desktop at start up. Howver, one more question if I may.....when
i put system in standby and then on again, i get the logon box again but just
hit enter to bypass. Can I eliminate this box too? thanks

J

John Barnett MVP

Try going to Control panel and clicking the power options icon. In the power
options window, click the Advanced tab. In advanced tab remove the tick from
the box 'prompt for password when computer resumes from standby' and click
OK.
