Stopping unnecessary programs

Hi

I have Vista Ultimate and I am getting very poor performance,
when I go to Task manager I see that out of 3069 Mb RAM (I actually have 4G)
over 2500
is cached, leaving less than 50 free.
The CPUs are running flat out most of the time, even though the only thing I
have starting up in MSCONFIG
is AVG antivirus, and I do not have many programs installed, just Office,
Train Simulator and Flight Simulator.

Is there a program I can get to stop unnecessary programs and Services from
loading up?

You sure you don't have malware running that you don't know about?

CurrPorts runs on Vista, and Active Ports doesn't.

It is a very recent install and I have AVG, defender and Firewall running.

How can I tell??

Don't worry about that. Unlike XP, Vista pumps as much RAM as possible with
stuff it thinks you're going to need next - Superfetch. Empty RAM is wasted
RAM. It is released the instant a program needs it.

That is definitely not right. I don't know what to suggest, but I think it
indicates a problem. What does Task Manager say is using the CPU time?

System idle time is 97% and mostly nothing is show as using CPU in task
manager but the graphs in CPU usage history are running up and down for no
apparent reason.

Thanks for the info on the System cache, I took the PC to a professional
shop yesterday because of the poor performance and they told me it was
directly related to the size of the cached memory and that the high number
shows running programs. So much for professional shops.....

BTW, now that the PC has been running for a long time, the CPU seems to have
settled down, so false alarm I guess, but that still leave me with a very
slow system.

Not to worry, I'll look elsewhere.

You gave the clue when you said "recent install"

CPU is running hard because Vista is file indexing to makesearch and
running thecomputer easier
It will settle down in a week or two, depending on your useage of the
computer; time turned on
