Stopping the messages!!!

I have Win XP and Windows Messenger 4.7. My daughter uses messenger but I do
not (but am cursed with sharing the same PC with a teenager). When she exits
it (ie. signs off and exits the messenger program), the messages keep
popping up. I have gone into preferences and unticked all the preferences
relating to the program running and alerts. I make sure that the messenger
icon is not in the taskbar and that it has been exited. I do not allow it to
connect automatically when windows starts or to run in the background.
But...the messages (something in your eyes makes me wanna loose myself sez
'hiya') just keep coming.
Have pity. Tell me what to do next.

This page does not mention the issue. I am aware of the Messenger issue for
unsolicited messages and have already taken the necessary steps to prevent
it. These messages are from my daughter's friends and not malicious, they
assume she is online and want a chat, but they still occur as popups even
though we have exited Windows Messenger and unticked every preference that I
can find. If we are connected to the internet, the messages keep popping up.
There must be a tickbox somewhere...

Greetings Mick,

It sounds like the application is still running -- do you have Norton Antivirus installed?
Recent versions of Norton Antivirus added a new "instant messaging scanning" feature, which
can conflict with Messenger and cause it to also keep starting. To stop it, open Norton
Antivirus (Right-click on the Norton Antivirus icon in the System Tray/Notification Area (by
the clock), choose 'Open Norton Antivirus'), click Options, then Instant Messenger then
uncheck MSN Instant Messenger and click OK.

I do have Norton Antivirus running. I have unchecked MSN Instant Messenger.
If viruses are spread by MSN messenger, are they always in the form of
attached files? If so, will Norton Antivirus pick them up anyway? Do I have
to tell my daughter not to open attachments, or does she need to scan them
first?

Greetings Mick,

Yes, exactly, the only way viruses are spread through Messenger are through file transfer,
which yes, will also be scanned by Norton anyway when they're executed/viewed (regardless if
this feature is on or not). All this feature does is automatically scan it when it arrives
as opposed to when it's actually executed/viewed, and as such, you really don't make yourself
more vulnerable by turning this off.

As such, she doesn't need to do anything special and can continue operating as per normal.
