Stopping MS_Webcheck.dll?

What is this process MS_Webcheck.dll please? It seems to be the source
of something called the Microsoft Web Monitor. I tend to distrust any
'monitor' that doesn't make its purpose 100% transparent. So I'd like
to get rid of it. How can I do that please?

I did some googling and found this suggestion:
"In the Run box type: regsvr32 /u WEBCHECK.DLL and the registry entry
is gone. Restart to see the result. If you however need
"ms_webcheckmonitor" again just register the WEBCHECK.DLL with:
regsvr32 WEBCHECK.DLL and after a restart it's back."

But on trying that unload procedure I got the message:
"WEBCHECK.DLL was loaded, but the DllUnregisterServer entry point was
not found.
WEBCHECK.DLL does not appear to be a .DLL or .OCX file."

Which doesn't make any sense to me...

I also read that this is part of the Internet Explorer 'offline
synchronizing' facility, but the latest I could find says that
off-line reading has now been dropped,

FWIW, I found several (8?) references to webcheck.dll in my XP Pro
registry.

No one here with any know-how on this please?

As far as I can work out Webcheck.dll is an intrinsic part of the Windows
OS.

It is involved with:

Auto Disconnect of Dial-Up Connections
Adding Items to Active Desktop
Synchronisation of "Make this page available offline?" pages.

I don't think that unregistering it would be a good idea.
Although this dll should not be sowing up in the running process every time,
sometimes you will initiate a process that requires the use of a particular
dll - in this case - if you were to request that a particular item on the
favourites menu was to be made "Available Offline". Then this dll would
definitely be needed.

Thanks Tim. What's puzzling me is that I gather IE
off-line reading has now been dropped...
