Stop Screen

One day went on MySpace and the computer hadn't been turned off in about a
week because hadn't been home because been at the hospital. The computer was
running really slow so restarted computer and every since then it gives the
stop screen after the start up logo thing and says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
and says if this is the first time this has happened to restart and if that
doesn't work then to uninstall any hardware/components recently installed.
We haven't downloaded anything in a long time because we have dial up and no
new hardware has been installed in ages. It says at the bottom STOP:
0x000000ED (0x81B569E8, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). If there is
anything I can do to get this computer working without having to reformat or
whatever, I would greatly appreciate the help. I've even tried to go in on
Safe Mode but it won't let me. It does the same stop screen everytime no
matter what I do. Anything you would suggest?

Boot your computer with the Windows XP Installation CD and choose the
"Repair (Recovery Console)" option from the CD menu.

When it has finished booting to the Recovery Console and has stopped
at the Command Prompt enter the following command:

CHKDSK C: /R

This command will take some time to process and will usually (but not
always) fix instances of this specific error.

Note: If your Windows XP is on a "system recovery" disk provided by
the computer manufacturer then you may not have the option of booting
to the Recovery Console. If you are in this unfortunate circumstance
post a response back here and we will try another method of getting
this done.

Have a look in Bios (Holding down DEL while booting) - look to see if the disk
is recognised and that the boot is to the disk. If so, change it to the floppie
and insert the disk manufacturers diagnostic program and let it run doing a full
scan of the disk - follow instructions and report back.

You need a bootable Windows XP disk of some kind. For this specific
purpose you can use any Windows XP installation CD to boot the problem
computer to the Windows XP Recovery Console.

Or you can create one on another Windows XP computer using Bart's PE
Builder (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/)

Use the bootable CD that this creates to boot the problem computer.
When it finishes booting open a Command Prompt window and enter the
command:

CHKDSK C: /R

This is not guaranteed to fix all instances of Unmountable_Boot_Volume
but it works in a very high percentage of these instances.
