STOP Error 0x00000027 when opening an Excel file

I have Excel 2003 installed on a Win XP SP2 PC and sometimes Windows will
blue screen when you click on an Excel file to open it. The PC is patched
with the latest Windows security updates, and the PC is a fairly new machine,
a Gateway E-4500S desktop model. It seems that this problem began after one
of the Windows Updates was applied but I have no way to confirm that. When
the PC blue screens, it leaves no details in the application event log nor
does it ask to send an error report to Microsoft. The blue screen error
message has the following info: "Windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer. STOP 0x00000027 (0XBAAD00A3, 0XA92604C4,
0XA92601C0, 0X805A2382)." Please advise. I have searched the Internet but
have not found a solution yet.

I was thinking about installing the latest MS Office 2003 service pack, but
all of our computers in the company have Office 2003 installed with no
service packs, and only 3 or 4 PCs in our company have this Excel problem.

Hi,
Try to check your Hard Drive Health by downloading the HDD diagnostic tools
from the HDD manufacturer website.
Look in the Event Viewer for any Error messages(X) for any cluses about the
causer, to do that Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK] and on the Event Viewer Double click the Error
Message(s) to get more info and you can post it back or search the net for it.
Did you download Net.Framework lately?.

Error message that you receive when you open a protected document on a
computer that is running a 64-bit version of Windows Server 2003: "STOP
0x00000027"

My hard drive is new and does not have any problems. The system failure does
not put anything in the event logs, that is one of the main problems why I
cannot obtain any more info on the system crash. I do not have W2K3 server
so the article you referenced does not apply to my situation. I did not
download .NET Framework lately. The problem appears to lie with Excel and
the operating system. Please advise further.

Hi Amanda,
Try running the Process Explorer and see if you will know exactly causing
this problem:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx
Or the FilMon from here
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Processesandthreadsutilities.mspx

Did you have a look in the Device manager to see if there is a malfunction
device there?.
If the above didn't yield any result try to Repair the XP Office or
Uninstall and Reinstall the Package.

Opena Run command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run then reboot.
HTH.
