stop autoformatting when outlining

I am a college student and I am required to use APA format with my papers.
Word 2003 used to allow me to create a table of contents without changing the
formatting of my headings. Word 2007 keeps changing the formatting no matter
what heading I choose on the home tab. I have already done everything in the
help for Word but nothing is working. Every time I choose a level while
outlining Word changes the format.
Is there a way to make it stop formatting? I would really prefer just to
format things when I want to and not format when I don't.

If you are trying to apply an outline level to the selected paragraph, do
this via the Paragraph dialog box, Indents and Spacing tab. Then update the
table of contents.

To display the Paragraph dialog box, click the dialog launcher button found
on the bottom right in the Paragraph group on the Home tab.

Note, however, that you can modify the heading styles to suit your needs.
Once you've done that, it will be a lot easier to use them for TOC purposes.

pages. I am also required to have a table of contents. In Word 2003 to make
a table of contents I switched to outline view and changed the level of my
headings to level 1, 2, 3, etc.

Whenever I try this in Word 2007 it automatically changes the font, size,
and format of my headings. It does this no matter what heading I choose from
the Home tab.
All I am asking is how to make it stop doing this. Is there a way to stop
Word 2007 from automatically formatting my headings?

Rather than changing your headings in Outline view, use the References
tab. Locate the command "Add Text" in the Table of Contents group. Pick
your Level 1, 2 or 3 from there. The headings will not change to
different styles using that method.

Good tip. Note, however, that if you have been using the built-in headings or
the Normal style to format text, the style will change even with this method
(to the built-in heading at the corresponding level).
