STOP 7B when booting El Torito CD

Hi all,

looking at previous posts, this isn't a new topic at all, but I still can't
get my CD to boot properly. I recently updated to XPe SP2, and now I'm
totally confused with the documentation:
- "Development Process/Deploy a Run-Time Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Building a
Bootable CD-ROM Run-Time Image" briefly mentions El Torito only supports EWF
RAM Reg mode. If you look for this in "Development Process/Design a Run-Time
Image/Enhanced Write Filter/EWF Modes/EWF RAM Reg Mode/Configuring EWF RAM
Reg Mode", you find an extensive customization procedure, but the
step-by-step tutorial in "Development Process/Deploy a Run-Time
Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Tutorial: Creating a Bootable CD-ROM" merely instructs
to do some basic EWF RAM mode configuration. Which is it going to be?
- "Development Process/Deploy a Run-Time Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Tutorial:
Creating a Bootable CD-ROM/Step 5: Run FBA, Enable EWF, and Run ETPrep on
your Run-Time Image" steps 10-13 instruct me to verify EWF is correctly
CONFIGURED (with no mention whether it should be enabled, an enable action
should be scheduled for the next boot, or whatever), while some blog says it
should be DISABLED altogether and some news topic suggests an ENABLE should
be scheduled for next boot just before etprep (honestly, I would expect the
latter one, so at least the post-FBA CD image would boot with EWF enabled,
not?). What's the verdict?
- The documentation mentions ETPREP /ALL should report "Deleted
EWFpartitions = 1" (which is inconsistent with EWF RAM Reg mode, isn't it?),
and "Swapped ElTorito volume drive X: with Boot volume C:"; the latter I
never get to see, instead I get some message mentioning the Redbook/IMAPI
service start value was reset to 0.

I use the recommended FAT32 fs, partition is 698MB (to fit on 80min/700MB
CD) on a 100+GB harddrive for FBA, boot partition size in target designer is
698MB, I use MinLogon and command shell, I pulled in the "El Torito CD
Support" macro, I've disabled "Start EWF Enabled" and left other fields at
their default values, I've tried both "simple EWF RAM Mode" and the "EWF RAM
Reg Mode". The CD drive stays on the same IDE port (pre-, post-FBA & CD
boot); the harddrive also stays connected (on the same SATA port) and I
tried both leaving an active partition on the harddrive, as well as
"diskpart disk clean"ing it after FBA+ISO imaging and before CD-boot. I'll
also include my fbalog.txt for starters reference (at the time I was still
using EWF RAM Mode; I noticed there's an error on activeds.dll/userenv.dll,
but I can hardly imagine they would be related). Since I will use this
specific configuration as a CD recovery for the system (which will
eventually run XPe from a harddrive), I left network cards etc out of the
configuration, even though they are installed (to avoid a bloated image).

The CD itself boots fine, I get to see the GUI boot screen, but when it
clears, the harddrive is briefly accessed and shortly after that I get a
blue screen mentioning STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7C7A524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,
0x00000000). The FBA ran fine, as you'll see from the log, and after FBA the
configuration boots and runs flawlessly while on the harddrive.

Can someone please help me out on this?

Hi Gert,

First things first:
7B error is shown very early in boot process and it mean that kernel is unable to find OS partition trough driver.
Even if you do not have a EWF installed at all you should pass this stage.

EWF related problem would manifest itself differently when some service program try to write something to disk you would get some
error saying that write is delayed or similar.
7B error happens before file system is mounted so no writes occur ever at this phase.

From the list that you gave us on the bottom I fail to see that you had a El-torito CD present during the FBA phase. That might be
one problem.
Other proble could be with BIOS itself.

If you think that you have BIOS related problems, just move CD that you have on different plafroms and see what happen.

CONFIGURED (with no mention whether it should be enabled, an enable action
should be scheduled for the next boot, or whatever), while some blog says it
should be DISABLED altogether and some news topic suggests an ENABLE should
be scheduled for next boot just before etprep (honestly, I would expect the
latter one, so at least the post-FBA CD image would boot with EWF enabled,
not?). What's the verdict?
- The documentation mentions ETPREP /ALL should report "Deleted
EWFpartitions = 1" (which is inconsistent with EWF RAM Reg mode, isn't it?),
and "Swapped ElTorito volume drive X: with Boot volume C:"; the latter I
never get to see, instead I get some message mentioning the Redbook/IMAPI
service start value was reset to 0.

I use the recommended FAT32 fs, partition is 698MB (to fit on 80min/700MB
CD) on a 100+GB harddrive for FBA, boot partition size in target designer is
698MB, I use MinLogon and command shell, I pulled in the "El Torito CD
Support" macro, I've disabled "Start EWF Enabled" and left other fields at
their default values, I've tried both "simple EWF RAM Mode" and the "EWF RAM
Reg Mode". The CD drive stays on the same IDE port (pre-, post-FBA & CD
boot); the harddrive also stays connected (on the same SATA port) and I
tried both leaving an active partition on the harddrive, as well as
"diskpart disk clean"ing it after FBA+ISO imaging and before CD-boot. I'll
also include my fbalog.txt for starters reference (at the time I was still
using EWF RAM Mode; I noticed there's an error on activeds.dll/userenv.dll,
but I can hardly imagine they would be related). Since I will use this
specific configuration as a CD recovery for the system (which will
eventually run XPe from a harddrive), I left network cards etc out of the
configuration, even though they are installed (to avoid a bloated image).

The CD itself boots fine, I get to see the GUI boot screen, but when it
clears, the harddrive is briefly accessed and shortly after that I get a
blue screen mentioning STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7C7A524, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000,
0x00000000). The FBA ran fine, as you'll see from the log, and after FBA the
configuration boots and runs flawlessly while on the harddrive.

Can someone please help me out on this?

thanks for replying, because I'm pretty much stuck on alternatives. With "I
fail to see that you had a El-torito CD present during the FBA phase", you
probably mean the CD with the pre-FBA ISO image? Sounds funny to me, since
it was actually inserted. Are you sure about this, since I get (which is

When further comparing to the documentation ("Development Process/Deploy a
Run-Time Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Running FBA on the Bootable CD-ROM"), they
appear to create the EWF partition on the ElTorito disk(?!), while my log
indicates it has been created after my primary partition on the hard
drive...

What about EWF? Should I use the RAM Reg mode or simply RAM mode (RAM Reg
always appears to be enabled after FBA - although I cleared "Start EWF
enabled" in EWF's settings -, but if etprep needs to write to the filesystem
to swap drive letters and EWF is enabled, the changes will get lost, don't
they)?

I don't suspect the BIOS much, as it's an Intel D865PERL mainboard (unless
there are known issues there, of course, but WinPE boots without problems,
for example).

First things first:
7B error is shown very early in boot process and it mean that kernel is
unable to find OS partition trough driver.
Even if you do not have a EWF installed at all you should pass this stage.

EWF related problem would manifest itself differently when some service
program try to write something to disk you would get some
error saying that write is delayed or similar.
7B error happens before file system is mounted so no writes occur ever at
this phase.

From the list that you gave us on the bottom I fail to see that you had a
El-torito CD present during the FBA phase. That might be
one problem.
Other proble could be with BIOS itself.

If you think that you have BIOS related problems, just move CD that you
have on different plafroms and see what happen.

latter one, so at least the post-FBA CD image would boot with EWF
enabled,
not?). What's the verdict?
- The documentation mentions ETPREP /ALL should report "Deleted
EWFpartitions = 1" (which is inconsistent with EWF RAM Reg mode, isn't
it?),
and "Swapped ElTorito volume drive X: with Boot volume C:"; the latter I
never get to see, instead I get some message mentioning the Redbook/IMAPI
service start value was reset to 0.

I use the recommended FAT32 fs, partition is 698MB (to fit on 80min/700MB
CD) on a 100+GB harddrive for FBA, boot partition size in target designer
is
698MB, I use MinLogon and command shell, I pulled in the "El Torito CD
Support" macro, I've disabled "Start EWF Enabled" and left other fields
at
their default values, I've tried both "simple EWF RAM Mode" and the "EWF
RAM
Reg Mode". The CD drive stays on the same IDE port (pre-, post-FBA & CD
boot); the harddrive also stays connected (on the same SATA port) and I
tried both leaving an active partition on the harddrive, as well as
"diskpart disk clean"ing it after FBA+ISO imaging and before CD-boot.
I'll
also include my fbalog.txt for starters reference (at the time I was
still
using EWF RAM Mode; I noticed there's an error on
activeds.dll/userenv.dll,
but I can hardly imagine they would be related). Since I will use this
specific configuration as a CD recovery for the system (which will
eventually run XPe from a harddrive), I left network cards etc out of the
configuration, even though they are installed (to avoid a bloated image).

The CD itself boots fine, I get to see the GUI boot screen, but when it
clears, the harddrive is briefly accessed and shortly after that I get a
blue screen mentioning STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7C7A524, 0xC0000034,
0x00000000,
0x00000000). The FBA ran fine, as you'll see from the log, and after FBA
the
configuration boots and runs flawlessly while on the harddrive.

Can someone please help me out on this?

Hi Gert,

1. You are right and you had used corect El-toriot speced disk.
2. Eventualy image that will go to CD for boot must use reg ram ewf.

I don't suspect the BIOS much, as it's an Intel D865PERL mainboard (unless
there are known issues there, of course, but WinPE boots without problems,
for example).

Actualy there are known issues with BIOS used by Intel on these boards :-(

WinPE use completely different procedure for boot from CD then XPe.

XPe relly on HDD emulation and EWF to fake writes.
WinPE has completely different ntldr and kenel code path that support boot from CD. In WinPE case there are only 2048 bytes covered
by El-Torito specification and the rest of files are writen in regular CD mode.

When further comparing to the documentation ("Development Process/Deploy a
Run-Time Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Running FBA on the Bootable CD-ROM"), they
appear to create the EWF partition on the ElTorito disk(?!), while my log
indicates it has been created after my primary partition on the hard
drive...

What about EWF? Should I use the RAM Reg mode or simply RAM mode (RAM Reg
always appears to be enabled after FBA - although I cleared "Start EWF
enabled" in EWF's settings -, but if etprep needs to write to the filesystem
to swap drive letters and EWF is enabled, the changes will get lost, don't
they)?

First things first:
7B error is shown very early in boot process and it mean that kernel is
unable to find OS partition trough driver.
Even if you do not have a EWF installed at all you should pass this stage.

EWF related problem would manifest itself differently when some service
program try to write something to disk you would get some
error saying that write is delayed or similar.
7B error happens before file system is mounted so no writes occur ever at
this phase.

From the list that you gave us on the bottom I fail to see that you had a
El-torito CD present during the FBA phase. That might be
one problem.
Other proble could be with BIOS itself.

If you think that you have BIOS related problems, just move CD that you
have on different plafroms and see what happen.

be scheduled for next boot just before etprep (honestly, I would expect
the
latter one, so at least the post-FBA CD image would boot with EWF
enabled,
not?). What's the verdict?
- The documentation mentions ETPREP /ALL should report "Deleted
EWFpartitions = 1" (which is inconsistent with EWF RAM Reg mode, isn't
it?),
and "Swapped ElTorito volume drive X: with Boot volume C:"; the latter I
never get to see, instead I get some message mentioning the Redbook/IMAPI
service start value was reset to 0.

I use the recommended FAT32 fs, partition is 698MB (to fit on 80min/700MB
CD) on a 100+GB harddrive for FBA, boot partition size in target designer
is
698MB, I use MinLogon and command shell, I pulled in the "El Torito CD
Support" macro, I've disabled "Start EWF Enabled" and left other fields
at
their default values, I've tried both "simple EWF RAM Mode" and the "EWF
RAM
Reg Mode". The CD drive stays on the same IDE port (pre-, post-FBA & CD
boot); the harddrive also stays connected (on the same SATA port) and I
tried both leaving an active partition on the harddrive, as well as
"diskpart disk clean"ing it after FBA+ISO imaging and before CD-boot.
I'll
also include my fbalog.txt for starters reference (at the time I was
still
using EWF RAM Mode; I noticed there's an error on
activeds.dll/userenv.dll,
but I can hardly imagine they would be related). Since I will use this
specific configuration as a CD recovery for the system (which will
eventually run XPe from a harddrive), I left network cards etc out of the
configuration, even though they are installed (to avoid a bloated image).

The CD itself boots fine, I get to see the GUI boot screen, but when it
clears, the harddrive is briefly accessed and shortly after that I get a
blue screen mentioning STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7C7A524, 0xC0000034,
0x00000000,
0x00000000). The FBA ran fine, as you'll see from the log, and after FBA
the
configuration boots and runs flawlessly while on the harddrive.

Can someone please help me out on this?

Thanks for the info and your time.

I guess I'm pretty much stuck then:
- in WinPE I can't load the SDI.SYS file, so I can't mount a compact NTFS
compressed SDI image to copy the files from, which means I would need to
include an SDI file as big as the target partition so I can use the SDI
manager to restore. However, I've tried the oscdimg.exe utility to create an
ISO image for DVD (-m override option), but that was too optimistic

. The
DVD starts but doesn't get far.
- XP embedded would have allowed me to load SDI.SYS (I think, I didn't get
to try) to squeeze everything on a CD, but that one I can't even boot from
CD.

I guess budget rescheduling is in order for 3rd party tools. There doesn't
happen to exist a recovery-only edition of Ghost, for example?

Actualy there are known issues with BIOS used by Intel on these boards :-(

WinPE use completely different procedure for boot from CD then XPe.

XPe relly on HDD emulation and EWF to fake writes.
WinPE has completely different ntldr and kenel code path that support boot
from CD. In WinPE case there are only 2048 bytes covered
by El-Torito specification and the rest of files are writen in regular CD
mode.

When further comparing to the documentation ("Development Process/Deploy
a
Run-Time Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Running FBA on the Bootable CD-ROM"), they
appear to create the EWF partition on the ElTorito disk(?!), while my log
indicates it has been created after my primary partition on the hard
drive...

What about EWF? Should I use the RAM Reg mode or simply RAM mode (RAM Reg
always appears to be enabled after FBA - although I cleared "Start EWF
enabled" in EWF's settings -, but if etprep needs to write to the
filesystem
to swap drive letters and EWF is enabled, the changes will get lost,
don't
they)?

7B error is shown very early in boot process and it mean that kernel is
unable to find OS partition trough driver.
Even if you do not have a EWF installed at all you should pass this
stage.

EWF related problem would manifest itself differently when some service
program try to write something to disk you would get some
error saying that write is delayed or similar.
7B error happens before file system is mounted so no writes occur ever
at
this phase.

From the list that you gave us on the bottom I fail to see that you had
a
El-torito CD present during the FBA phase. That might be
one problem.
Other proble could be with BIOS itself.

If you think that you have BIOS related problems, just move CD that you
have on different plafroms and see what happen.

looking at previous posts, this isn't a new topic at all, but I still
can't
get my CD to boot properly. I recently updated to XPe SP2, and now I'm
totally confused with the documentation:
- "Development Process/Deploy a Run-Time Image/Bootable
CD-ROM/Building a
Bootable CD-ROM Run-Time Image" briefly mentions El Torito only
supports
EWF
RAM Reg mode. If you look for this in "Development Process/Design a
Run-Time
Image/Enhanced Write Filter/EWF Modes/EWF RAM Reg Mode/Configuring EWF
RAM
Reg Mode", you find an extensive customization procedure, but the
step-by-step tutorial in "Development Process/Deploy a Run-Time
Image/Bootable CD-ROM/Tutorial: Creating a Bootable CD-ROM" merely
instructs
to do some basic EWF RAM mode configuration. Which is it going to be?
- "Development Process/Deploy a Run-Time Image/Bootable
CD-ROM/Tutorial:
Creating a Bootable CD-ROM/Step 5: Run FBA, Enable EWF, and Run ETPrep
on
your Run-Time Image" steps 10-13 instruct me to verify EWF is
correctly
CONFIGURED (with no mention whether it should be enabled, an enable
action
should be scheduled for the next boot, or whatever), while some blog
says
it
should be DISABLED altogether and some news topic suggests an ENABLE
should
be scheduled for next boot just before etprep (honestly, I would
expect
the
latter one, so at least the post-FBA CD image would boot with EWF
enabled,
not?). What's the verdict?
- The documentation mentions ETPREP /ALL should report "Deleted
EWFpartitions = 1" (which is inconsistent with EWF RAM Reg mode, isn't
it?),
and "Swapped ElTorito volume drive X: with Boot volume C:"; the latter
I
never get to see, instead I get some message mentioning the
Redbook/IMAPI
service start value was reset to 0.

I use the recommended FAT32 fs, partition is 698MB (to fit on
80min/700MB
CD) on a 100+GB harddrive for FBA, boot partition size in target
designer
is
698MB, I use MinLogon and command shell, I pulled in the "El Torito CD
Support" macro, I've disabled "Start EWF Enabled" and left other
fields
at
their default values, I've tried both "simple EWF RAM Mode" and the
"EWF
RAM
Reg Mode". The CD drive stays on the same IDE port (pre-, post-FBA &
CD
boot); the harddrive also stays connected (on the same SATA port) and
I
tried both leaving an active partition on the harddrive, as well as
"diskpart disk clean"ing it after FBA+ISO imaging and before CD-boot.
I'll
also include my fbalog.txt for starters reference (at the time I was
still
using EWF RAM Mode; I noticed there's an error on
activeds.dll/userenv.dll,
but I can hardly imagine they would be related). Since I will use this
specific configuration as a CD recovery for the system (which will
eventually run XPe from a harddrive), I left network cards etc out of
the
configuration, even though they are installed (to avoid a bloated
image).

The CD itself boots fine, I get to see the GUI boot screen, but when
it
clears, the harddrive is briefly accessed and shortly after that I get
a
blue screen mentioning STOP 0x0000007B (0xF7C7A524, 0xC0000034,
0x00000000,
0x00000000). The FBA ran fine, as you'll see from the log, and after
FBA
the
configuration boots and runs flawlessly while on the harddrive.

Can someone please help me out on this?
