Stop 0x0000008E

I see that I'm not the only one, but am hoping someone will take pity on me &
try to help . . .

Dell XPS Gen 5
Windows XP Professional SP2

Since 10/10/2006, I've been getting intermittent BSODs & I'm always able to
restart with no trouble. Prior to that, everything had been working fine.
Interestingly, & I don't know if this helps, it *only* happens in the middle
of the night. Given how much time I spend on the machine, it's pretty odd
that's the only time it happens -- it never happens when I'm actually doing
anything. And, in between BSOD, the machine seems to work absolutely fine.

10/10/06:
Stop 0x0000008E
(0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0xB9D3DB40, 0x00000000)

Windows Error Reporting didn't shed any light.

As best as I can recall, the only thing I changed around that time (about 8
days before) was hooking up a new external (Maxtor) hard drive. Removed the
drive & prayed for the best.

10/15/06
I also noticed that my system was running much slower. Did some poking
around, identified Cidaemon.exe in task manager as the culprit, and found
KB899869. Disabled indexing service.

10/18/06:
Stop: 0x0000008E
(0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0xB4FA5B40, 0x00000000)

Windows Error Reporting didn't shed any light.

Called Dell Tech Support, and was told to download & run Dell Crash Analysis
Tool, which identified tfsnifs.sys. Tech support Googled it and told me to
uninstall Sonic DLA & Sonic Update Manager . . . and to hope.

10/25/06:
Stop 0x0000008E
(0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0xB9D6EB40, 0x00000000)

Windows Error Reporting no help
Re-ran Dell Crash Analysis Tool -- no problems found.
Arrgh!

10/26/06:
Stop 0x0000008E
(0xC0000005, 0x00000000, 0xB6AC1B40, 0x00000000)

Windows Error Reporting failed to shed any light.
Re-ran Dell Crash Analysis Tool -- no problems found.
Called Dell Tech Support again: was told to run the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics
problem for Windows Blue Screen errors. It ran for 9+ hours and everything
passed.
Called Dell Tech Support back & was told the tech really thought it was
Sonic MyDVD Plus, that he'd had reports it was running like a worm. Was told
to completely uninstall all Sonic, which I did. He instructed me that the
next time it happened to not do anything but call him right away.

11/1/06:
Stop 0x0000008E
(0xC00000005, 0x00000000, 0xB618AB40, 0x00000000)

Did nothing other than call Dell Tech Support again -- I'm still waiting for
a call back 5 hours later.

Of course, I have no idea what any of this means, but I think I've taken
pretty good notes, and I also can provide the basic info that was sent to the
Windows Error Reporting since I took photos of the screens.

I'm very good at following directions if anyone has any suggestions.

BIOS is up-to-date, and according to Dell, there are no updated video
drivers for my card (256 mb Nvidia GeForce 6800). No viruses, spyware,
malware, or anything like that.

I've done some reading trying to get this resolved, but much of what I read
is over my head. What strikes me is that this only happens in the middle of
the night when I'm not on the computer. I read something that seemed to
indicate that maybe Windows Update is the culprit. That might be the case
because I *think* (can't check right now since I'm still waiting on tech
support to call back) I've got Windows Update set to download & install in
the wee hours. I also have Symantec's Norton SystemWorks 2006 Premier to
check & run SpeedDisk if needed in the wee hours. However, none of that is
new -- that's the way things have been since shortly after getting the
machine a little over a year ago.

I will greatly appreciate any suggestions -- this is making me nuts!

could be a power company spike or dip...
if the unit is not on a UPS...put it on one and see what happens

Thanks -- it's already on a brand-new UPS . . .

Well then
turn off all the stuff (like defrag, etc) that runs at night

Interesting you should mention that because that's kind of what I was
thinking. Microsoft Update was set to run daily at 3 AM, and I changed that
yesterday so that it will run at 11 AM instead. Those error messages always
happen in the middle of the night, so if they now start happening during the
day (when I'm on the computer & can see what exactly was going on at the
time), I think I'll have identified the culprit.
