Stop 0x0000001E Error

Tim P

I'm getting a stop 0x0000001E error on bootup. It started
yesterday after installing MSXLM4.0 SP2 and a DivX update,
and removing some HP DVD software.

The event log identified the error as:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0x1174c085, 0x00000000,
0x1174c085). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was
saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini051104-01.dmp.

The blue screen of death shows only:

STOP: 0x0000001E
(0xC0000005,0x1174C085,0x00000000,0c1174C085)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

The problem is I cannot remove any of the updates or
reinstall the HP DVD software because Windows Installer
does not work in SAFE mode.

Any ideas on what the error is and a fix?

I'm getting a stop 0x0000001E error on bootup. It started
yesterday after installing MSXLM4.0 SP2 and a DivX update,
and removing some HP DVD software.

The event log identified the error as:

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck
was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0x1174c085, 0x00000000,
0x1174c085). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was
saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini051104-01.dmp.

The blue screen of death shows only:

STOP: 0x0000001E
(0xC0000005,0x1174C085,0x00000000,0c1174C085)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

The problem is I cannot remove any of the updates or
reinstall the HP DVD software because Windows Installer
does not work in SAFE mode.

Any ideas on what the error is and a fix?

Basically what you likely have is a driver that is acting up. The fact that
you can load up in safe mode lends evidence to this. I would start by
setting the print spooler to manual (this would let you know if any
printer-related drivers are to blame). Also, disable ALL 3rd party
software: Antivirus especially. Hardware drivers (sound, video, scsi,
whatever) are the next things I would look into.
