Sting.exe Virus

Jeni Whitaker

Hi everyone,

I was d/l Sting.exe as someone suggested [can't remember who, sorry] and
my existing Virus Checker [VCatch basic] came up with the following:

Advanced Malicious Application Detection -
Suspicious characteristics in file stinger.exe
Malicious probability: 97%
do you want to delete this virus?

I *did* delete it!

Just found it a bit odd that a virus checker would have a virus!

I am new to this newsgroup so any comments would be much appreciated.

TIA

Basically -- VCatch basic is crap "IF" you are talking about STINGER.EXE from mcAfee as this
removal tool is NOT a virus. However, we don't know what you are doing and *maybe* you did
something that actually got STINGER.EXE infected...

In any case,
Please go to one or more of the below online scanners and perform a scan of your platform
then report back your results.

McAfee:

In my opinoin, it didn't. VCatch is so lame that it alerts on "stinger".
(assuming this stinger is the right stinger)
I am new to this newsgroup so any comments would be much appreciated.

Doesn't VCatch install spyware and adware in the users computer
too? I'm thinking that there was a thread not too long ago about
VCatch.

Thankyou for all your replies. Yes, it *was*
Stinger.exe...sorry, my mistake.

What was I doing at the time VCatch found "the virus"?
I was simply downloading Stinger.exe! Nothing else.

I have since visited Trend Micro as suggested and the result
of the Housecall scan was:

Congratulations! Housecall did not find any viruses etc.

BTW last week I downloaded Avast! Which I thought looked
very good and lots of you people had recommended it.
Unfortunately, it didn't work with my Email Client,
Turnpike, so I had to uninstall it. Although the Avast!
People said I should alter certain things in the Registry, I
feel this is an area I know nothing about, so didn't even
attempt that!

So what's the best thing to do now? Any suggestions
please? Hope I've made myself clear. Thanks again for
any help.

Like I said VCatch is crap if it identifies McAfee's Stinger as a virus.

Let's be certain. You obtained Stinger from McAfee { http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ } or
from somewhere else ?

Since you already tried Avast...try one of the following.

AVG - http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php - FREE
CA eTrust - http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm - FREE for one year.

Thankyou for all your replies. Yes, it *was*
Stinger.exe...sorry, my mistake.

OK, assuming you were downloading this from the AVERT Tools website then you
have nothing to worry about.

That would be: http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp

Or direct: http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp#stinger

This also contains the list of viruses / malware it finds... Which is not
the full set of detection from the full product.

The Stinger downloaded from there is a safe bet, and hence I would suggest
your Vcatch is incapable of telling the good guys from the bad guys...

Most of the decent products take steps to make sure other security products
don¹t false alarm on things like their own code, other security products
code or the signature database.

It would appear Vcatch is above such things... Or *not* as the case would
appear to be!!

Well, if you are comfortable with HouseCall giving you a clean bill of
health, then you are done. Otherwise choose a "real" AV solution (in
comparison to vCatch) to do another sweep of your machine.

My email is obfuscated at the base of this message if you have any other
questions... or just post here.

Hi Dave

Thanks for replying. In fact I got Stinger from
McAfee and as I said, halfway through d/loading,
VCatch said Stinger was a Virus. You won't
believe this, but I've just gone to the AVG Free
Antivirus website, filled in the form etc.,
waited for the d/l to start, it didn't, so I
started it manually and guess what? The page
cannot be displayed! Oh, the joys of
computing! Will keep trying though. Thanks
again.

Regards

Jeni

Quick Message for .V.artin

Thanks. Will try averttools as you suggest.

You could try a MD5 scan trough www.symantec.com when you download
"sting.exe" when it's correct, STING.EXE should pass. If it doesn't, the
file is infected.
