I have answered all of Richard's questions. I hope some one can help me
access the files on the External Drive.

Waiting,

me confused tooo. maybe the problem is that the usb 2.0 is being plugged
into a usb 1.0 hub. Maybe, formatting the ext drive with machine 2 will
make it usable by machine 2. Maybe, a disk image of machine 2 onto the ext
drive would be better than a regular backup. Maybe, going into admin tools,
disk management to see that the ext drive is recognize would be helpful too.

Pam,

I am having a similiar problem. I had backed up the data from within My
Documents and have replace my notebook. I have tried to restore the files to
the new system, which did work. The problem is that I can see the folder on
my new computer but I can't access the files and get the same message you
have.

The problem does appear to be related to access permissions. At this point I
am trying to delete the folder just to regain my drive space but It will not
allow me to delete it either.

I need help also and I think our problems are related.

Give this a try..
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&Product=winxp
In XP Home you have to boot in safe mode to see the security tab. In XP
Pro you have to disable simple file sharing.

I apologize I have not read completely the thread (it is long!) - however I
did notice reference to "Retrospect" - evidently the external drive you
refer to (I'm guessing) is a Western Digital dual-option USB" drive.
Retrospect is an image file backup program and requires Retrpspect to
restore files or make them "readable".
