After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, and after downloading all of the WinXP-specific device
drivers from the manufacturer's web site and burning them to a CD,
simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

The first step here is to go to the Sony web site and see if there are
XP drivers for all components of that laptop. If there are, download
them (all ... could be a dozen or more). If not, then this becomes a
real can of worms, not necessarily impossible but sufficiently difficult
to require an "expert" level of knowledge. Installing an OS on a laptop
whose manufacturer did not support that OS is time consuming at best,
and sometimes impossible. A few years ago I wanted Windows 98 on a
Toshiba 1415, and I finally got there (with EVERYTHING working), but it
took about 60 hours of research, downloading and testing to find all of
the right drivers. And in some cases, the drivers don't exist at all
(or can't be found).

You won't be able to do an upgrade. OEM versions can only do a clean
install. Backup all important information. Make sure you have the
original media for any programs you want to install, they will have to
be reinstalled. Get all the XP compatible drivers for your laptop from
the laptop manufacturer's website and burn those to a CD. Boot from the
XP CD and follow the prompts. See this link for how to do a clean
install of XP:

After XP is installed, install the drivers for the chipset, network,
video and sound from the drivers CD.

1. Back up existing data you want to keep. Don't bother backing up
programs. Make sure you have all the installation disks for your software.

2. Format your hard drive.

3. Install XP. Install your software. Bring your old files in from backup.
